Picking which type of dog you want to bring into your home can be a hard but important decision. For some people, it is as easy as walking into a shelter and allowing the dog to adopt them. For others, it can be a question that they will deliberate on for months before making a choice. If you have found yourself in the predicament of wanting to get a new puppy but do not know which type to choose, then you have come to the right place. Below you will find some questions that you should ask yourself that will most definitely help you to decide which breed of a dog you want to adopt.

Personality?

Each breed of canines has their own unique personality. This could be because every type has different instinctive nature's bread into them. Some are protectors that will make it their duty to be loyal, faithful, and always at your side. Others are more playful in nature and will be hyper and unruly. You should choose a type of dog who has similar qualities in their personality as you. If you are a laid-back person who is not very active a large dog might be better suited for you. If you are looking for a dog who is kind of high maintenance and attention needy you may be looking for a smaller breed of dogs.

Size?

There are several different size dogs available for a person to adopt. Obviously, when you adopt a puppy, they are going to start off small, but you have to ask yourself how big you want your puppy to grow. Do you live in a spacious house with plenty of room to run and play? If you do a large dog could live comfortably in your home. However, if your residence is in the tinier side and there is no yard to speak of, then you should probably consider looking at smaller breeds of canines.

Children?

If you live in a home with children, you will have to be especially conscious of which breed you choose. You should certainty teach your child how to interact correctly with the canine but even then mistakes can be made. You do not want your little one to get nipped at because they accidentally hurt the puppy. Do your homework on the breed of your choice to make sure that they are known for being patient and good with kids. Even then you should always be aware of the danger a dog can pose to a child. Make sure to take per cautions because even the best of dogs have been known to bite.

Training and Tricks?

How much time are you willing to spend training your puppy? All dogs will need to be taught how to do certain things such as go outside, sit or lay down. Some breeds are more stubborn then others and take longer to teach. This can be frustrating for some people, and you may find you don't have the proper amount of time in your day to deal with it.

Additionally, if you want a dog that you can spend a lot of time with teaching several neat tricks you will need to find the correct breed. There are some breeds of canines that refuse to learn certain tricks. Some of them cannot learn them due to limitations such as size or weight. Smaller dogs cannot perform as many tricks as the larger dogs, which is something you should consider when adopting a puppy.

Shedding and Grooming

Grooming is a big part of owning an animal regardless of the type. However, there are some that require much more attention in this department then others. If you select a breed of dogs who have a long shaggy coat, you are going to face grooming problems that you would not encounter with a short-haired dog. There are several people who choose not to groom their pets themselves and take them to a professional instead. If you think that is what you would do, then the only reason this question would pertain to you is because of shedding. Do you want the responsibility of cleaning up after a dog who is shedding constantly? If not, then you should probably look for a breed of a dog that has very short hair, which does not shed as often.

Walking and Playing?

Finally, you should decide on a type of dog who suits your physical abilities. If you are an older person who cannot run around like you used to be able to, then you should consider a smaller dog who will not need to be walked as much. Larger dogs will require heavier play and can sometimes be rough when walking them. You do not want a dog who is going to walk you! Take into account the activeness of the breed you choose, some are more hyper then others. Is this something that you can accommodate?

Have Fun!

Once you deliberate and ask yourself all the questions listed above you will be more prepared to choose the right breed of a dog. It is easy to walk into a pet store and choose the cutest puppy whom you see, but if you are uneducated about the breed, you have chosen you may be in for a surprise. You do not want to abandon your new friend later in life because you did not realize how much work they would be! Have fun with your decision and your loyal friend!

Hi! Very useful and cute hub! I especially like when you talk about your personality matching that of your pet. I used to have a little dachshund and I loved her a lot. Makes me want to adopt another one. Thanks for sharing. :)
